Tips For Making Your Fresh Cut Flowers Last Longer

Tips For Making Your Fresh Cut Flowers Last Longer

By Jamie Jefferson

Fresh flowers can brighten any room and are quickly becoming a feature in interior design. But drooping and dying flowers are a definite design "don't."

Whether you've cut fresh blooms from your backyard or you have received a bouquet, you will want to do everything that you can to keep your flowers looking beautiful.

Use the following tips to keep your cut flowers looking fresh and full as long as possible.

Start with the freshest flowers possible.

If you're buying fresh flowers to brighten your home each week, make sure you're starting with a fresh bouquet. Buy your flowers at a farmer's market or directly from a florist to ensure the best quality. You can make fresh flowers last longer than ones that have been sitting in cold storage for several days. If you're cutting them yourself, make sure to prepare your vase and water before you cut so that you can instantly transport the flowers into their container.

Get the right container.

Your vase or container should be tall enough to cover at least three to four inches of the flower stems, with a few extra inches for additional support. You can always trim your stems to fit the size of your vase. The size of your container doesn't matter as much as the cleanliness of your container. Make sure your vase or other container has been cleaned thoroughly, because left over bacteria can age your flowers prematurely. Rinse out all of the soapy residue so it won't damage your flowers.

Trim the ends of your stems.

Fill your kitchen sink with cool water. Hold the stems underneath the level of the water and then trim them with sharp scissors. Make a diagonal cut so that all of the ends of the stems are pointed. This will increase the surface area of the flower stem that is exposed to the water, allowing the flowers to take in more water.

Prepare your vase.

Fill your vase with enough warm water so that it will cover at least three to four inches of the stems. You can use specially made plant food that will increase the life of your flowers, or you can use aspirin. To use the aspirin method, crush two uncoated aspirin and add them to water. Stir in your plant food and aspirin completely into the water before adding your flowers.

Remove leaves.

Submerged leaves are major contributors to the development of bacteria within a vase, which can shorten the shelf life of your flowers. Make sure you remove any leaves that will be below the level of the water to reduce bacteria. If any leaves fall into the water, remove them immediately.

Keep your vase clean

You should remove your flowers and add fresh water (with plant food or aspirin) as much as once a day. It's important to at least switch the water out every three days to keep your flowers fresh. If a layer of scum begins to develop on the vase at the water level, remove the flowers and clean out the vase with a mild soap. Make sure to rinse thoroughly before adding the flowers back in.

Flower Tips - How to Take Care of Orchids

Flower Tips - How to Take Care of Orchids

By Joan One

As a beginner, in order to grow and properly care for your orchid, there are some basics you will need to keep in mind. These relate to selecting the right orchid, potting media, water, light, humidity, temperature as well as fertilizer.

Orchid selection

Orchid growing is not difficult once you find an orchid species that is easy to grow. Select orchid species such as the phalaenopsis and the paphiopedilums which tend to thrive in a home environment, thereby making them ideal for beginners. Before parting with your money at the orchid store, check to see that the orchid plant is proportionate to the pot and its roots are in the potting media. The leaves of the plant should be light green and without blemishes, preferably with some unopened buds. The orchid should also be pest-free and without fungal spotting.

Potting media

Avoid planting your orchids in regular potting soil as this will kill them. It is important to note that in the wild, orchids grow by attaching themselves onto structures such as trees and rocks. As such, when growing them at home, you should ensure that your potting media permits the easy draining of water which will ensure that your orchid roots are able to breathe. Ideal potting media included tree bark, fern, wood chips, moss and charcoal.

Light

Too much or too little exposure to light could damage and impair the growth of your orchid. One way to check for proper light exposure is by observing the orchid leaves. Healthy leaves should have a light green coloration, while an underexposed leaf will have dark green coloration. On the other hand, an overexposed orchid will have yellow/red/brown coloration on their leaves.

Water

As a general rule, you need to water your orchid once a week or every five days during the warm seasons. Too much watering may lead to the rotting of the roots. When not sure, you should under-water, rather than over-water your orchids.

Temperature

The ideal daytime temperature for orchid growing is approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit, while a nighttime temperature of 60 degrees will do. In order to facilitate proper blooming of your orchids, always ensure that they are never exposed to a nocturnal temperature drop of around 10 degrees.

Humidity

In order to remain healthy, your orchid will require at least a 50% level of humidity. If you reside in a low humidity area, you may use a humidity tray to ensure that your plant receives enough water from the air around it. A humidity tray is positioned under the orchid and contains water which will evaporate and rise, thereby increasing the levels of humidity in the room.

Fertilizer

Growing orchids require regular use of fertilizers in order to provide the plants with enough nutrients for growth. If your potting media is tree bark, you should get a high nitrogen content fertilizer as the bacteria in the bark will be competing with your orchid for nutrients. Preferably, you should use a fertilizer brand that contains 20% nitrogen, 20% phosphorous and 20% potassium.

How to Make Dried Flowers Yourself

How to Make Dried Flowers Yourself
By Krista Qian

Want to make your garden's summer flowers last all year? Ok, the easiest way is to bring your garden flowers indoor and dry them.

* First: Harvesting Flowers

It is best to cut your flowers in the morning hours after the dew has evaporated from the plants. Once cut, group stems into bunches using rubber bands (pure rubber rubber bands work best) and remove them from the sunlight as soon as possible.

There are definite developmental times which are best for cutting flowers for drying. This can be very specific for different plants or even different cultivators of the same plant. In general, it is best to pick immature flowers (ones that are not completely open) since flowers continue to open during the drying process. If you pick a flower at the time that it looks perfect, it will continue to open while drying, leaving you with a flower past that 'perfect stage'. Most people pick flowers too late. For example, have you ever seen a pretty dried rose? If you really look at it, the flower is still fairly closed. Avoid harvesting flowers too mature in development. Such flowers will generally shed upon drying and will not hold up well in arrangements.

We offer specific picking and growing recommendations for each flower we grow. Just click on any dried flower name on any of our lists to obtain a wealth of specific information including pictures!

* Second: Preserving Flowers

With only a few exceptions, we air dry all our flowers. We simple hang flower bunches upside down on wire (over two miles of it is stretched in our circa 1860 barns). The barns offer ideal conditions: 1) darkness; 2) very good airflow; 3) cool updrafts; 4) perfect (usually) humidity levels. Once you have cut your flowers, it is important to remove them from the sunlight as soon as possible. This, along with drying in the dark, is the most important factor in maintaining good color.

Note:

1)How to Hang Flower Bunches

Suspend a 1/2-inch-diameter horizontal pole or pipe from the ceiling. If fastening hooks into your ceiling or walls is not an option, use tripods or two high-backed chairs to support the pole. A bent paper clip makes a perfect hanger for your bunches. Put newspaper or a drop cloth on the floor under the hanging bunches to catch fallen leaves, seeds, and petals. Hang bunches far enough apart to allow good air circulation.

2) How Long to Hang Flowers to Dry

The drying process takes from 10 to 20 days, depending on the plant. When dried, the stems should snap. You must test the flowers for dryness. Dissect one or two, and make sure the flowers'' insides are thoroughly dry.

Some flowers, such as delphiniums, keep their color better if dried quickly near sources of warm air such as a heater. Large, many-flowered blooms such as dill, fluffy grasses, and Queen Anne''s lace, should be dried upright, not hanging upside down.

3) How to Dry Flowers with Silica?

Silica-gel drying is done in shallow, airtight, plastic (or glass) containers or trays. I dry many flowers at once using a 10- by 18-inch airtight plastic container. Yours need not be that big, but make sure that the flowers aren't crowded. Spread the flowers out, face up, on a 1-inch (minimum depth) bed of crystals. Carefully spoon or sprinkle more silica on top until you've completely covered the flowers with at least another inch of crystals. Drying flowers with single-petal structures, such as daisies, facedown is another technique, but my results have been identical using both approaches. To dry flowers facedown, create a small mound for the flower head, place the flower head facedown on it, and add silica over the flower until it is covered. Flowers can be almost touching, and because similar kinds of flowers dry at the same rate, you may wish to group similar blooms in the same container. Seal the container, and don't disturb it for three to four days.

Remove delicate blossoms very carefully. Shake or brush off the crystals lightly with a soft artist's paintbrush. Leaving flowers in desiccant too long makes them very fragile, so remove flowers right away once you've determined that they're dry enough.

4) How to Use Sand to Dry your Flowers?

Sand must be very fine, clean, dry, and preferably salt free. Sifting is recommended to remove coarse grains and foreign particles. Rinsing the sand in water several times to remove any soil is also recommended. Damp sand can be dried in an oven by placing in shallow pans and baking at 250 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. Be sure to use only flowers in their prime and process them quickly to prevent wilting.

To dry with sand, place an inch or two of sand in a container; scoop away a small amount of sand to form a depression on the surface; place the flower head upright in this depression and press the sand in and around the outside of the flower to support it. Next, scoop a little sand into your hand and allow it to trickle in a fine stream around each petal. Start with the outer petals and work inward row by row, allowing the sand to build up equally on all sides of each petal so its position and shape are not altered. Flowers dried with sand are fragile so be very careful when removing them from the sand. Notice that flowers must be stored in a strong carton to protect the petals from breaking.

5) Using a Microwave Oven to Dry Flowers

The latest and fastest method to dry flowers is to use a combination of silica gel and a microwave oven.

With the use of a microwave, you can now dry your flowers very quickly. Flowers should be gathered at their peak or else they will turn brown. Use any of the drying agents (silica gel, sand, borax) in a container deep enough to cover the bloom. Leave a 1/2 inch stem on the flower, and place it face up on a 1/2 inch layer of drying agent. Carefully sprinkle enough agent to cover the flower, and place it in the microwave along with a small bowl of water. Do not remove the flowers from the agent immediately, but set them aside for several hours. Listed below are some times for drying flowers in a microwave.

By using air drying and other methods also, many flowers can be preserved for year-round enjoyment. Plan now to include some flowers in your garden for drying, and check nearby fields and road sides throughout the summer and fall for more dried plant materials.

* Third: Care of Dried Flowers

Routine dusting can be accomplished using a real feather duster or hair blow dryer on it's lowest setting.

* Last: Storing and Enjoying Dried Flowers

We recommend wrapping the flowers in newspaper and placing them in a cardboard box. Do not store the box containing the dried flowers where it is unusually damp (some basements) or very dry (some attics). Also, a lot of people think you should never store dried flowers outside (it would be way to cold). This is simply not true. Temperatures are not important. In fact, a garage can be an ideal place for storing dried flowers. Actually, if your home is heated by forced air, the preferred place to store dried flowers would be in a outside building away from the dry heat.

In general, dried flowers should remain out of direct sunlight while you enjoy them in their final state. This will minimize fading over time. We also suggest not to place dried flowers in the path of forced air heat registers. This extremely dry air is very hard on dried flower structure (causes shattering).

Suggestion for use of dried flowers would include wreaths, swags, sheaths, bouquets, and sprays. Simply hanging dried flowers in a room can be very appealing. Also, placing clusters of bunches in a basket, as though you just came in from a garden, is most attractive.

Caution: if you do store your dried flowers outside, make sure you protect them from small rodents and insects (a few mothballs will work).

Finally, I should to say that drying flowers can be addictive! Before long, wreaths will adorn all your doors, and swags will hang from every wall. And they'll all have come from your own garden. Talk about an extended season! You'll soon see why dried flowers are often called "everlastings".

I'm a Chinese girl, I love all beautiful, fashion and interesting things, and I'd like to introduce and display an excellent selection of China fine art, handicrafts, jewelry, toys and gifts, and fashion accessories to you, also give you great suggestions about gift ideas and introduce you the latest fashion trends in China.

Fresh Flowers vs Dry vs Artificial

Fresh Flowers vs Dry vs Artificial
By Judith Babb

What will it be fresh flowers, dry, or artificial ones? Now here is a dilemma many people have when it comes to choosing the best flower arrangement for a special occasion or just for a home decoration. The decision is easier to make if you consider a few factors such as budgeting or personal taste. But from past experience, you should definitely go with fresh flower arrangements especially if you want to use them as a symbol of your personality and style.

1. Artificial flower arrangements

The majority of people who choose artificial flowers do it because they require no maintenance. All you have to do is put the floral arrangement it in a corner, forget about it and go about your business, because you won't have to worry about any water spills or having to change the soil or even prune the leaves. So you can simply consider it a part of the static decor of your office or home. Artificial flowers might require a little cleaning every once in a while, but don't worry too much about it: all you have to do is wipe them with a damp cloth.

Another advantage of purchasing artificial flowers would be the price. Most of the times the cost of artificial flowers is lower than the price of natural flowers, however, remember that the quality often matches the price of the artificial flower product.

Now if you are thinking about giving a gift of artificial flowers to someone dear, think twice before you go shopping. Sure, artificial flowers might last longer, but fresh flower arrangements are truly an expression of love and respect. Would you really want to give a plastic flower arrangement to your wife, mother, or sweetheart? It might last for years, but the memory of that wonderful, fresh flower arrangement will last forever, just as love stays in a person's soul rather than in objects.

Why would people want to use artificial flower arrangements instead of using natural, fresh, flowers? Well, I can tell you a couple of good reasons. By all means, buy artificial flowers if you are allergic to real ones or if the person to whom you want to give a gift of flowers to is.

Another good reason to choose artificial flowers instead of fresh ones would be location. Yes, the location because if, let's say, you want fresh roses as an example for your wedding and you live in a remote area, it could be pretty expensive to import them for the ceremony. Just stick with some quality silk roses instead and use the budget for something else. On the other side, think about a wedding on a hot summer day; fresh flowers may wilt because of the summer heat, but artificial ones won't, but if you are planning everything carefully, you can easily adapt in order to find the best natural flowers for your ceremony. (Find local types of flowers in remote areas and make sure you have refrigeration for the flowers in summer.) It's up to you to decide whether you want artificial flowers or fresh ones for any occasion.

2. Dried flower arrangements

If you are looking for durability when purchasing a floral arrangement, dried flowers are the closest choice to the natural flowers. This is because dried flowers are still the real thing preserved in a manner that partially maintains the qualities of natural flowers. A variety of natural flowers are dried through several methods, such as: freeze-drying, air-drying, using the microwave or by placing them in silica gel. What's great about dried flowers is that you can make them yourself, rather that purchasing them.

In most cases, people decide on the type of flowers they want by considering the preservation factor. Want to keep them forever? You have two options:

  • Buy artificial flowers, as their look will never change;
  • Depending on the type of fresh flowers you choose, you can dry them or preserve them either way, they might not look the same in few years.

From my point of view, trying to preserve flowers forever is like trying to stay young forever. They are wonderful and unique while they are fresh, but no matter how much we try to keep them alive, there comes a time when we have to let them go and accept that flowers were meant to bring us beauty and wonderful memories, even if for a short period of time. Why should we go for the artificial flowers when we can enjoy the true thing of beauty, with living colors, stunning fragrances and the miracle of nature?

3. The best choice - fresh flower arrangements

Choosing fresh flowers for your home or for special occasions is always a choice of style and personality. Nature has provided us with so many wonderful flowers, and fortunately, finding the flowers that highlight your personality and taste has become an easy task. Whether you decide to shop for them from the local florist, order them online, or grow your own, you will find that fresh flowers are always the best choice.

Natural flowers have so many things to share, from smells, shapes and colors, they all have something to say - 'This is a special occasion'. If you love fresh flowers but you don't want to spend a fortune on them, just buy flowers that are in season locally. This way, you will be able to enjoy the freshness and the wonderful smells anytime you want.

The bottom line when it comes to flower arrangements is that you need to choose what makes you happy. What is the impression you want to create when giving a gift of flowers? What do you want to remember twenty years from now about your wedding? Do you want a house full of life and nature or do you like a more static decor? A fresh arrangement of flowers can make the difference between a dull room and a fresh, stylish room. Think about your preferences when it comes to color, flower smells and types. Check out a few magazines or even talk with your local florist for suggestions, then you will be ready to turn your visions into reality.

Pure Water - Be Truly Healthy

By Jeremiah Jens

Have you ever tried doing water therapy to cure a simple cold, instead of taking your over-the counter pill? Chances are, as many people have experienced, that you are healed with drinking just a few glasses of nothing more but - water.

In fact, ancient cultures have found a way of healing by fasting for days and only having water to drink. It is a fact that our bodies are 75% water, and we can survive a week without food, but, not without water. Even astronauts need pure water to survive in space.

Like the rushing sound of a river, drinking water cleanses us from the inside, making us feel better on the outside. Try drinking less water each day and you'll feel your body suddenly thrown into a whirlpool of chaos, making you sick. Your body, then, is thirsty for water's life nurturing benefits. Water is the very fuel that cleanses you of diseases-causing toxins. Surely, at some point, you have known what a drop of rejuvenating water on your parched lips feels like.

Pure Water: Not Your Average Water

Water means life, health, and healing. There is no point arguing this fact. But, it is also a known fact that there are many chemicals and contaminants found in drinking water and by choosing to drink pure, means drinking the most natural water that our bodies truly deserve. In our modern times, it is unfortunate that access to pure, drinking water is far from reach, unless you live in a place that's ecologically-intact.

Pure Water: The Key to Your Body's pH Level

Your body has a unique filtering system that balances the acid and base of your body's fluids through the amazing tag team of your kidneys, liver, and lungs. The more acid you have, the more prone you will be to various forms of diseases. Our modern lifestyle have made people more prone to acidosis and pure water is the key in bringing back the balance, for your body to work at its prime. The very food you eat is a major factor in your body's pH levels and for this reason, we see campaigns on getting balance through fruits and vegetables. Your body needs a pure water source to carry oxygen-rich blood to your cells, replenishing it with essential vitamins and minerals.

Pure Water: Your Secret to Ultimate Hydration

To get pure, contaminant-free water is a never-ending quest and there are incidents of contamination even with the Environmental Protection Agency's ( EPA ) water treatment standards. Imagine how rejuvenating a glass of water is... and how much more if you are drinking pure water. When your body is dehydrated, it means being stressed and it creates "stress chemicals " which are released to deal with the situation. In time, these toxins doesn't only make you constipated, but it can accumulate into a chronic disease like obesity, chronic pain or fatigue, cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, or even cancer - which can all be fatal in the end. Pure water rejuvenates your cells better than your regular cup of coffee or a can of your fizzy drink, minus the artificial sweeteners. Drinking pure water means giving your body a no-fuss diuretic that surpasses the simple answer to thirst. When your body is properly hydrated, your body is fully energized for the day, without you having to chug down a bottle of energy drink.

Pure Water: Your Clean, Weight Loss Alternative

Spending hundreds and thousands on the next miracle pill and diet to lose weight can be a very frustrating experience. There are many fad miracle cures promising weight loss when the answer is closer to nature. Pure drinking water may be the symbolic fountain of youth and health, which can be our wonder potion to lose weight - for good. In fact, water is a good, natural appetite suppressant, filling you up and cutting down your cravings for unhealthy food. The less you eat, then, the less you weigh. Research have shown that a low water intake can mean high fat and salt deposits in your body, making you fat. Pure water can aid your liver in metabolizing your stored fats and turning it into energy needed by your body. Drink less and you'll force your body on a survival mode by retaining more water that can make you swell. By drinking pure water, you cleanse the colon, forcing fats and other toxins to go out of the body like one would clean a dirty pipe with a water hose. Make sure to drink your water cold if you want to burn calories.

The number of glasses you take is dependent on your age, height, and weight. Normal recommendations suggest eight glasses of pure water daily. It is also important to know that we also get water from the foods we eat. It is never too late to drink up to health and the next time you hit the bar, go for a glass of pure water - on the rocks!

Let me show you how you can change your water and change your life with the incredible alkalizing, anti-oxidant, and super-hydrating powers of pure water, the way mother nature intended it to be. Your key to ultimate health awaits. Receive your free DVD and eBook at: http://www.thewatermyth.com/
